My verdict
The GT-1000 13 does its job for light, beginner runners who slightly overpronate, and it is a great walking shoe, but the midsole did not protect me well. I would not buy it at retail, only at around ₹4,000–4,500.
Pros
- Premium-feeling materials for the price
- Thick heel padding and stiff heel counter
- Long, premium laces
- Moderate, non-intrusive 3D Guidance support
- Wide platform for a stable ride
- Compact, feels lighter than its 270–280 g
- Smooth heel-to-toe transition
- Amazing step-in comfort, superb walking shoe
Cons
- Midsole lacks impact protection, ankles and calves worked extra
- Not enough for excessive overpronation
- Very flexible, durability doubtful
- Outsole rubber feels softer than on premium ASICS
- Lacks the ASICS feel of cheaper Gel Excite 10 and Gel-Pulse
- Not worth the retail price
Avoid if
Avoid it if you are a serious runner wanting a ₹5,000 shoe that lasts 800 km, or if you overpronate excessively.

Scores
Ride
6.0/10
The heel is soft and the transition smooth, but the midsole did not absorb impact well and my ankles and calves worked extra over 10 km.
Design & Comfort
7.0/10
The materials, padding, heel counter and laces feel premium and the shoe is compact and stable, though the guidance is too mild for excessive overpronation.
Value
6.0/10
Not worth the retail price and durability is doubtful because of its flexibility, but worth it at ₹4,000–4,500.

Full review
I unboxed the GT-1000 13 and ran 10 km in it for my first impression. It is the entry-level shoe in the ASICS stability line, below the GT-2000 and Kayano. My US 9 weighs 270–280 g, but it felt more like 240–250 g on foot. The stack is 36 mm at the heel and 28 mm at the forefoot, with an 8 mm drop. The ride was my biggest disappointment. The midsole did not absorb landing impact the way the Flytefoam in the cheaper Gel-Pulse does. After 10 km my ankles and calves felt like they had worked extra. The heel is soft with a gel insert, the forefoot is a little firmer, and the heel-to-toe transition is smooth. It did not give me the ASICS feel I get even from the cheaper Gel Excite 10 or Gel-Pulse 15 and 16. The build feels premium for a budget shoe. The engineered mesh upper is high quality, the laces are long and premium, and the heel padding is thick, so I do not expect any rubbing. The heel counter is stiff to hold the ankle, and the tongue reduces lace pressure. It feels compact, not bulky like most stability shoes. The 3D Guidance System is moderate. It guided me without disturbing my stride, and the platform is 115 mm wide at the forefoot and 96 mm at the heel, so the ride is stable. It will not protect you if you overpronate excessively. For that, go to the Kayano. My worry is durability. The shoe is very flexible, unlike the stiff Kayano and GT-2000, and the outsole rubber feels softer than on their premium shoes. It suits very light beginners who slightly overpronate and want a budget stability shoe. Step-in comfort is amazing, and it is a superb walking shoe for flat feet. I would not recommend it at the retail price. Buy it at ₹4,000–4,500 for running, or ₹4,000–5,000 for walking. If you want a ₹5,000 shoe that lasts 800 km, do not buy this one.

Gel-Kayano 33
This became my favourite Kayano of all the ones I have tested, and at ₹17,000 it is one of the safest full marathon shoes in India for most runners. Very heavy runners and severe overpronators who dislike soft foam should stick with the Kayano 32.

StabilityNew Balance
860 v14
The 860v14 is one of the best shoes for flat feet and overpronation, and for me it beat the Kayano with extra bounce and stability. I give it 9 out of 10 overall, and at ₹6,000–9,000 it is a highly recommended buy.

StabilityASICS
Gel-Kayano 32
The Kayano 32 is top quality in every way and its guidance felt like it laid a flat road for my foot. But for my weight and moderate overpronation it was too much shoe for ₹17,000, and I would buy the GT-2000 14 or 13 instead.
