After 60 km I could not find a single flaw. At the current discount price, the Kayano 31 is one of the best stability shoes on the market and I give it full marks, though I would not recommend it at retail price.

The Kayano 31 is a refinement of the Kayano 30. Both weigh about 300–310 g in my US 9, with 40 mm at the heel, 30 mm at the forefoot and a 10 mm drop. The midsole is FF Blast Plus Eco with ASICS's 4D Guidance System, PureGEL in the heel and a high-abrasion rubber outsole. I have run about 50–60 km in it, including one long run. ASICS made the upper lighter and more plush, and raised the toe box. That gives your toes room to splay and reduces heat by about 20%. The heel padding is now softer but still plush. The midsole is slightly softer, and ASICS says the 4D guidance area is about 20% bouncier, so your ankle returns to neutral faster. The heel is more rounded for a smoother transition if you land on your heel. This is a very protective, very stable shoe. With my mild overpronation I get ankle discomfort in shoes without stability, but here I can run at a steady pace without worrying about anything. I feel extra cushioning in the heel, which is a plus for heel strikers, though I cannot tell if it comes from the gel. You cannot run fast in it, and it was not designed for that. It suits beginners, heavy runners, overpronators, and anyone with past injuries or pain in the knees, hips, calves, ankles or arch. If you are over 85 kg and overpronate, look no further. If you are under 85 kg, the GT-2000 13 is a good choice too. The difference is small: the Kayano has a bit more stability and is slightly softer, but lighter runners may find it heavy. I do not recommend any shoe at retail price. On ASICS's site and partner stores it sells for ₹5,000–9,000, and some people bought it for ₹4,000. Under ₹10,000 it is the best value for money, and at that price nothing beats it. It was the most-bought marathon shoe in India in 2024–2025.

StabilityNew Balance
860 v14
The 860v14 is one of the best shoes for flat feet and overpronation, and for me it beat the Kayano with extra bounce and stability. I give it 9 out of 10 overall, and at ₹6,000–9,000 it is a highly recommended buy.

StabilityASICS
Gel-Kayano 32
The Kayano 32 is top quality in every way and its guidance felt like it laid a flat road for my foot. But for my weight and moderate overpronation it was too much shoe for ₹17,000, and I would buy the GT-2000 14 or 13 instead.

StabilitySaucony
Tempus 2
The Tempus 2 is the softest stability shoe I have tried, light and versatile, and at ₹7,000 to ₹9,000 one of the best value stability options. Avoid it if you are a neutral runner or have high arches.
