My verdict

The Megablast is one of the best running shoes ever, with an explosive, springy FF Turbo Squared ride I have never felt before. It is only worth ₹23,000–24,000 if you run 2:30–5:00/km and can spare the money.

Pros

  • Explosive, springy FF Turbo Squared ride
  • Fastest and easiest 10K in months
  • Light at 220 g for its stack
  • Soft, breathable, durable woven upper
  • Gusseted tongue and secure heel
  • Heel padding works well
  • ASICSGRIP outsole rated for 1,000 km
  • One shoe for training, long runs and races

Cons

  • ₹23,000–24,000 price
  • Narrower than the Superblast 2 and 3
  • Not for beginners
  • Not for sprinting
  • Overkill for slower runners

Avoid if

Avoid it if you are a beginner, run slower than about 5:00/km, or cannot comfortably spend ₹24,000.

Scores

Ride

9.0/10

The FF Turbo Squared foam is explosive and springy, unlike anything I have felt, and gave me my fastest, easiest 10K in months.

Design & Comfort

8.0/10

The soft woven upper, gusseted tongue, heel padding and secure heel all work well, but it is narrower than the Superblast.

Value

8.0/10

Worth ₹23,000–24,000 only for fast runners with money to spare; for others there are many better-value shoes.

Full review

My first 10 km in the ASICS Megablast was my fastest 10K in two or three months, and also the easiest session I can remember. I finished fresh. I started at 5:00/km and it felt like just the starting point for this shoe. My UK 8 weighs 220 g and feels even lighter, despite a big platform: 45 mm at the heel, 37 mm at the forefoot and an 8 mm drop. The magic is the FF Turbo Squared midsole. It is not as soft as the Superblast 3, but it is explosive. Stand in it and it feels like a spring. I have never felt that before. For my profile it was more than I need, almost overwhelming. The upper is a soft, light, high-quality engineered woven mesh. It is breathable and durable. The thin tongue is gusseted on both sides and keeps the foot from moving. Many people dislike the racing-style laces, but I like them. I did not expect heel padding in a shoe like this, and it works well. The heel is secure. The ASICSGRIP high-abrasion rubber should give strong traction for 1,000 km. The fit is narrower than the Superblast 2 and 3. It fits my foot correctly, but many say it feels narrow, so check that. This is for runners at 2:30 to 5:00/km, weighing from 60 kg up to 110–120 kg, who want one shoe for 5K, 10K, half and full marathons, intervals, speed sessions, fartleks and long runs. It is not for beginners or sprinting. It sells for ₹23,000–24,000 in India. If you have that disposable money and fit this profile, it is the best in the industry. Otherwise, there are plenty of good shoes for much less, and the Sonicblast at ₹10,000–12,000 gives a similar profile.
